POMED Notes: Globalizing Autocracy, U.S. Foreign Policy, and Democracy Promotion

On Wednesday December 10th, Georgetown University hosted an event at the National Press Club entitled, “Globalizing Autocracy, US Foreign Policy and Democracy Assistance.” Participants included Tom Melia, Freedom House; Daniel Brumberg, Georgetown University; Larry Diamond, National Endowment for Democracy; Michele Dunne, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Thomas Carothers, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Ambassador Gerard Stoudmann, International Foundation for Electoral Systems; Carina Perelli, International Foundation for Electoral Systems; Gerald Hyman, Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Participants in the first panel cited the rise in oil prices, and the War on Terror as incubators of authoritarianism, while members of the second panel spoke about instances when democracy promotion has been counterproductive.
